  • Atlanta Evergreen Park Tour

One Vacation ~ A Lifetime of Adventures!

Overview:  The tour departs from the lobby of Atlanta Evergreen Lakeside Resort.  During the drive, we will spend about 40 minutes exploring the layout of Stone Mountain Park.  The goal is to allow guests to sit back and observe the park as we acquaint you with all there is to see and do.  Our guides invite you to ask questions, take photos and enjoy getting to know other guests as we travel.  Please wear your seatbelt and stay seated as we tour Stone Mountain Park.

Atlanta Evergreen Trail System:  We have multiple entrances to the Hawk Trail which departs from the Atlanta Evergreen Lakeside Resort property.  The Hawk Trail connects to the Heron Trail which after a small connector trail then leads to the Cherokee Trail – the longest trail in the Park (5.1 miles):

  •  The second floor of the hotel behind the outdoor pool
  •  The lower parking lot off of the service road.

Departing the Driveway:  To the right takes you to the Adventure Outpost for water activity rentals, lake cruises and the zipline adventure courses.  Taking a left returns you to the main gate/park entrance, Stone Mountain Golf Club, Attractions areas and the Inn at Stone Mountain.
On the left you will notice a boat launch area.  This is the location for any kayaks or watercraft you may have brought with you.  We also have a private Pavillion operated by Atlanta Evergreen ideal for company retreats, reunions and weddings.
Damlike structure we cross is actually one of two spillways in the park to help regulate the water capacity in the lake.  Stone Mountain Lake is a man-made structure that primarily allows non-motorized watercraft, fishing and hiking.
Campground:  A full service campground is located on the left offering everything from full-hookup RV spaces to tent sites and even Yurts.  Reservations can be made by visiting Stonemountainpark.com
As we travel the park, you may notice a variety of wildlife.  Most are small species like geese, deer, ducks and the occasional coyote or raccoon.
Another operation that is a part of Atlanta Evergreen is Stone Mountain Golf Club.  There are two 18 hole courses and a full bar/restaurant.  The course offers tournaments, family-friendly golf courses, and a putting green.  Included with a stay at the resort is a complimentary small basked of balls for the practice area.  For reservations you can visit stonemountaingolf.com

Stone Mountain Park has 7 trails in total; 5 of which are connected with connector trails so you can hike 1 mile or 12+ miles and not repeat over the same trail twice. The two stand-alone trails are the Muscogee Trail, near the main entrance to the park, and the Soungbird Habitat and Trail which is a mile from the Resort after taking a right out of the Resort Entrance. The driving map located at the Resort Front Desk has color coded locations and distances of each trail on the foldout map.

The main drive into the park forks.  To the right the road would take you to the location for the Yellow Daisy Festival ground.  Little known fact – the Stone Mountain Yellow Daisy is only found within a 60 mile radius of the mountain.  The festival is a favorite as it brings together hundreds of artisans and offers a craft fair that wanders the trails with food, music and face painting for the little ones.
The fork to the left leads past the entrance to the Historic Plaza.  A compilation of original homes from throughout the Georgia area.  This location houses a historic representation of architecture and is a fun place to step back in time.  It’s also open most days offering a nice activity when the attractions are closed.
Historic Plaza
We drive by Crossroads where all the attractions areas are located.  Good tips to know:
    • The shuttle will bring you here during operating hours – but there sometimes is a wait and it is first come first serve.
    • At Crossroads you will find everything from vibrant festivals to miniature golf, a full-sized train to ride, splash pads in the summer, dinosaur adventures and in the evening the amazing drone and light show – often with a full fireworks display
    • Limited dining is also available here
The Skyride is adjacent to the attractions and takes you to the top of Stone Mountain with 360 degree views of Atlanta.  While Skyride is weather dependent, it is often open even though the Attractions area is closed.  This thrilling opportunity offers guests a 360 degree view of the Atlanta valley from atop 825 foot granite “mountain”.
Departing Crossroads, you will notice our other hotel facility.  The Inn at Stone Mountain is utilized during festivals and busy times of the year.  It operates seasonally.

Historic gristmill in Stone Mountain Park
Some of the lesser-known areas of the park are fun to add to a journey:
    1. The covered bridge is a step back in time and well worth venturing across to hear the wooden planks as you cross the bridge
    2. The Grist Mill used to be an authentic working mill and was built almost 200 years ago (1869).  It is one of the most scenic areas of the park and includes a few picnic tables.  If you wanted to bring lunch and enjoy the location – it’s a great place to take a midday break.
    3. The Quarry is an actual historical mining area where granite that makes up Stone Mountain has historically been mined.  Established in 1845 it has produced over 7.5 million cubic feet of granite.  Our granite has been shipped as far away as the Pamana Canal and Tokyo, Japan and is even part of the foundation for the Lincoln Memorial.  Some call the mountain the Eighth Wonder of the World due to its size.
    4. King’s Island, with its 1 mile scenic hike, is the only car accessible island on the park. The covered bridge and island have been film locations for popular TV shows and movies over the years. If you are hiking here in the Springtime, you may be lucky enough to see a newborn fawn nestled down in the underbrush as the island is a favorite place for doe’s in the park to give birth.
    5.    Located off of the Cherokee Trail ½ a mile after crossing Robert E. Lee Blvd heading toward the Skyride Plaza is a tribute to the Atlanta Pen Women, the Atlanta Pen Women’s garden.  This organization was developed as a professional organization for women writers, artists and composers.  The garden houses steppingstones which represent members of the association and symbolize the significance of creativity as a “rock” in their lives.

The Historical & Environmental Education Center (Confederate Hall) is an interactive theater and museum.  Its purpose is to educate Park guests and local students about the fascinating geology and ecology of Stone Mountain.  Bathrooms are also located here.
There is a playground for kids on this section of the road.
The tour will also pass by the Songbird Habitat.  This area was originally created as an archery area for the 1996 Summer Olympic games.  It has since been converted into this habitat for the more than 200 birds that call the park home.

Highlights of the park are everywhere, and we hope you will find there are many areas of interest for almost any visitor!  We hope you enjoy this complimentary tour of Stone Mountain Park.  Enjoy exploring the many treasures and return to visit us again soon!
